A Who's Who Guide
of Professors at
Pasadena City College

PCC STUDENTS FOR ACADEMIC ACCOUNTABILITY

EXCELLENT:  A.

Professors earning a grade of "excellent" have shown a dedication to their field, have motivated students to do independent research and scholarly investigation (even if done for non-credit), and have a serious, passionate interest in explaining their field in such a way that even non-majors would find the subject matter scintillating and lively.  Students fortunate enough to enroll in these professors' classes will gain new perspectives (some radical, others not) and have their current views challenged.  After the course ends, they will see life from a radically different point of view.  Aristotle will come alive as a person who one can truly disagree with; the U.S. government will no longer seem like an abstract, amigious entity far away; and even mathematics (yes, math!) will turn from mechanical, routine computations to data that can be used for medicine, politics, literature, and other fields.  These professors, then, are the true guardians of a liberal arts education at Pasadena City College, and they deserve widespread support and unreserved recommendation.

Professors earning a grade of "excellent":

Dr. Robert Zeuchner, Ph.D (philosophy and religious studies).
Dr. Suzanne J. Anderson, Ph.D (political science and history)
Dr. M. M. Dodge, Ph.D (history)
Dr. Brian Kennedy, Ph.D. (English)
Dr. "Uncle" Raymond Badalian, Ph.D (mathematics)
Dr. Leslie K. Parker, Ph.D (human sexuality)
Dr. Price, Ph.D (sociology)
Dr. Kuen Hung Lee, Ph.D (mathematics)
Dr. Hugo Schwyzer, Ph.D (history)
Mr. Mark McQueen, M.A. (English)
Mr. Larry Bivins, M.A. (Spanish)
Ms. Sandra C. Haynes, M.A. (art history)

FAIR:  B - to C+.

Professors earning a grade of "fair" have shown to teach their subject effectively, but they lack the passion, depth, and know-how to effectively show that their subject is fascinating and  relevant to the students' lives.  Overall, these professors are not bad, but they have dropout rates higher than that of the excellent professors, and they may be dogmatic and unwilling to listen to the viewpoints of students.

Mr. J. L. Barnes, M.A. (chemistry)
Dr. Howard Hertz, Ph.D (English)
Mr. A. C. Exton, M.A. (health)
Mr. D. M. Tiberi, M.A. (psychology)
Dr. J. B. Bickley, Ph.D. (psychology)
Dr. P. Ricards, Ph.D. (logic)
Dr. Foreman, Ph.D. (English)

FAIL: D+ or lower.

Professors earning a grade of "fail" have not mastered the ability of teaching.  They do not effectively bring the material of the course in a logical, neat, and orderly fashion that can be comprehended; they teach either for money or for egotistical concerns; they are unhelpful, do not give students a chance to demonstrate what they know, and they lambaste critical thinking and "original" ideas; they are late, boring, and have students scratching their heads wondering what was said; most students in these classes receive lower scores and dropout in higher rates.

Professors earning a grade of fail:

(Note:  I advise you to not enroll in any class in which these professors are listed.  If all other professors have classes filled and this professor is your only choice, I would advise waiting another semester).

Dr. M. Benson, Ph.D (biology)
Mr. V. T. Cave, M.A. (English)
Mr. G. K. Lee (geography)
Dr. R. Gasparian, Ph.D (mathematics)
Dr. Frances Nyong, Ph.D (political science)
Ms. Worley, M.A. (political science)
Mr. M. Zingale (film); no degree since he never went to college.
